When should a 3D dental X-ray be performed?
A 3D dental X-ray should be performed before beginning dental treatment so that the dentist can assess all pathological changes. This technology is particularly useful in the case of impacted teeth and when advanced carious lesions are suspected, as these conditions are not visible to the naked eye and can be difficult to diagnose. The dentist may also order an examination in the case of inflammation, dental trauma, or during implant and orthodontic treatment. X-rays are helpful in diagnosing all types of dental and periodontal disease.
What allows you to see a 3D photo of your teeth?
A 2D image provides information about the height and width of an object. A 3D X-ray also allows for the assessment of its depth. This prevents details from overlapping. Furthermore, image distortion is avoided. 3D X-rays visualize soft tissue and the anatomy of the examined teeth. They allow for the analysis of tooth roots, the course of nerves and blood vessels, and the position of the nasal sinuses. Thanks to such a precise image, the dentist can thoroughly understand the situation in the patient’s oral cavity. They can avoid damaging nerves or blood vessels during the procedure. This, in turn, reduces the likelihood of complications and significantly increases patient comfort.
How is a 3D dental X-ray performed?
A 3D dental X-ray is similar to a standard 2D X-ray. The entire examination is painless and takes just a few seconds, and the results can be immediately analyzed by the doctor. It does not require any special preparation from the patient. It is only necessary to remove glasses, jewelry, clips, and other accessories. If the patient wears removable braces or dentures, these must also be removed for the duration of the examination.
Before the examination, the doctor places a lead rubber apron on the patient, which protects the rest of the body from radiation resulting from the scattering of the main beam directed at the x-rayed areas. The radiation dose is kept to a minimum. The only contraindication to a 3D dental X-ray is pregnancy, as even a small dose of radiation can adversely affect the fetus. In pregnant women, the test is performed only when absolutely necessary, as it is not possible to postpone treatment until after delivery.
