Why does my tooth need root canal treatment?

Endodontic treatment (root canal treatment) is a way to save a tooth when the pulp becomes inflamed or infected (gangrene). This condition is most often caused by deep decay, but it can also be caused by repeated procedures on the tooth, cracks, or fractures. Sometimes, even without obvious cracks or fractures, trauma to the tooth can lead to pulp damage. Failure to treat an inflamed or infected pulp can result in severe pain and the development of an abscess.

Is root canal treatment painful?

Root canal treatment is performed under anesthesia, making it completely painless. The procedure can be performed under local anesthesia (also using the painless Wand computer-assisted anesthesia) or sedoanalgesia.

How long does root canal treatment take?

At the Dr. Łyszczarz Clinic Dental Center, we strive to minimize root canal treatment time. Therefore, it is usually performed in a single visit (only in special cases does the treatment process require multiple visits). The duration of treatment depends primarily on the type of tooth being treated and its anatomical structure (number of roots, root canal structure), as well as other conditions in the oral cavity. Root canal treatment typically lasts approximately 1-3 hours.

The duration of root canal treatment depends on many factors, primarily the type of tooth and its degree of complexity. The number of canals, their shape, any curvature, and the presence of inflammatory lesions are important factors.

At the Dr. Łyszczarz Clinic Dental Center, we strive to minimize treatment time, so in many cases, the entire procedure can be completed in a single visit. Only more complex cases require multiple stages.

The average treatment time is one to three hours. In the case of multi-root canals or retreatment, this time may be longer.

Why is root canal treatment expensive?

The cost of root canal treatment stems from its complexity and the use of advanced technologies and materials. The final price is influenced by, among other factors:

  • the use of modern equipment, such as a surgical microscope and apex locator,
  • the use of high-quality, disposable or limited-edition endodontic instruments,
  • the need for precise diagnostic tests, including digital X-rays,
  • the use of specialized disinfectants for root canals,
  • the use of modern materials for tight root canal filling,
  • the time and experience of the dentist performing the procedure.

However, it is important to remember that root canal treatment allows for the preservation of the natural tooth, which in the long run is a more economical solution than its removal and replacement with an implant or a prosthetic bridge.

Why is root canal treatment so expensive?

This is due to several factors:

  • Modern root canal treatment requires the use of expensive, specialized equipment.
  • During root canal treatment, the dentist uses a set (several to a dozen) of precise, specialized instruments of various sizes. At the Veronadent Dental Center, we use tools from renowned global companies and strictly adhere to their application protocols to minimize the risk of tool breakage in the root canal (the tool’s lifespan is limited to a few uses).
  • Several X-rays are necessary (we use exclusively digital technology – more expensive to use, but minimizing radiation dose).
  • During root canal treatment, it is necessary to use numerous chemical preparations that support the treatment’s durability.
  • The treatment process is completed by filling the root canal system, for which at the Dr. Łyszczarz Clinic Dental Center, we use specialized equipment and top-of-the-line materials.

Can root canal treatment fail?

In over 90% of cases, root canal treatment is effective and successful, resulting in long-term preservation of the tooth. However, the doctor cannot guarantee a good result for the patient; however, he or she takes full responsibility for the proper course of treatment (in accordance with the principles of medical practice). Failures most often result from the structure of the tooth’s roots, which may prevent fully effective treatment. They may also result from the extent of the infection, the virulence of the bacteria, and impaired immune function.
