Malocclusion

Treatment of malocclusions – Krakow

Malocclusions are a common problem, not only for aesthetic reasons but also for health reasons. Improperly positioned teeth can cause headaches, jaw displacement, jaw pain, slurred speech, and changes in facial shape and proportions. Furthermore, patients with malocclusions are more susceptible to tartar buildup, tooth decay, and other periodontal diseases. For this reason, it’s worth considering orthodontic treatment. Minor malocclusions in children can be treated with a spatula, mobility appliances, muscle exercises, or frenulum trimming. However, the best results are achieved with fixed braces, which can be started at any age. We invite you to schedule an appointment at our clinic in Krakow, where we will discuss a detailed treatment plan.

What are the most common types of malocclusion?

There are many types of malocclusions, and each requires individualized treatment. The most common abnormality is overbite, which is the recession of the lower dental arch relative to the upper. It accounts for approximately 70% of all malocclusions. In its extreme form, the upper incisors may recede toward the upper lip, and the face may become distorted due to a recessed jaw and downturned corners of the mouth. Overbite impairs the correct pronunciation of the sounds s, z, c, and dz, which resemble ś, ź, ź, and dź, respectively. Many patients also come to our clinic with underbite, characterized by the lower dental arch overlapping the upper dental arch. The facial features include a protruding chin and lower lip, giving individuals with this condition a menacing expression.

Another common malocclusion is a deep bite, characterized by a significant overlap of the upper teeth over the lower teeth. The face becomes asymmetrical, and the teeth wear down, which can lead to gum and periodontal disease. Articulation of dental sounds is also distorted. An open bite is also common. In this case, the teeth do not contact each other at all, creating an underbite. This makes chewing and biting off food difficult and results in problems with the correct pronunciation of the anterior lingual-dental consonants: t, d, c, dz, s, z, and n. Other common malocclusions include a crossbite, a recessed jaw, crowded teeth, and separated teeth.

Why should malocclusion be treated?

Any irregularity in the alignment of teeth can have serious consequences – not only aesthetic but also health-related. For this reason, orthodontic treatment is best initiated during childhood. However, anyone who values a beautiful and, above all, healthy smile can visit an orthodontist.
