The acronym CAD/CAM consists of two parts: CAD stands for computer-aided design. It allows a dental technician to prepare a 3D design of a prosthetic restoration based on 3D camera scanning of the teeth being prepared. The result is a virtual, three-dimensional model that is significantly more accurate than traditional methods. CAM, on the other hand, stands for computer-aided manufacturing, enabling the precise production of a previously designed object. It is created in a special milling machine, which uses drills, milling cutters, stones, and other tools to shape the materials into the desired shape.
The use of CAD/CAM allows for greater precision in the production of prosthetic work. As a result, the completed designs are perfectly tailored to the patient’s needs and are characterized by several times greater resistance to stress than traditionally made work.
